Karen Lancey was born on the South Coast of England. Her family immigrated to Canada 5 years later where she grew up in Calgary, Alberta. Art was always a very strong subject throughout childhood and she later went on to attend the Alberta College of Art and Design, majoring in Commercial Art, jewellery making and ceramics.
