Patty Patching moved to this area from the prairies to do her Master’s degree in Fine Arts at the University of Victoria. Afterwards she continued her study of Art by becoming a Registered Art Therapist. She paints because it feels good! In this series of paintings Patty took her inspiration from the flow of life so visible on the West Coast…the ebb and flood of tides, lush vegetation, a nd thirst quenching rainfalls.

Raised in Victoria, British Columbia, Carollyne Yardley completed two years in the Faculty of Fine Arts, and is a graduate of the University of Victoria, where she completed a double major in Psychology and History in Art. Most recently, she has taken art classes at the Victoria College of Art and studied with Tony Ryder at The Ryder Studio School in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Since 1997, she has been the founder, business owner and creative director of a software application & web development company which provided her with a strong foundation in the visual communications industry.

“I view art and design as a process of thinking, creating, problem-solving, and communicating,” says Carollyne.

She cites a wide, ecclectic range of influences that inspire her work—not just Dali, Mark Ryden, Todd Schorr, Pop Surrealism, Raphael, Ingres and Norman Rockwell, but also Lucille Ball, Elaine from Seinfeld, Wonder Woman, Elvis Presley, and helicopter rides.

In September 2010, Carollyne launched her new business as a visual artist, and began to remove the mask of technology to emerge as her true self, standing with her hands on her hips, yelling and laughing at the squirrels in her yard.

EarthWeave Paper Design

Adrienne and Hanna are paper makers from Salt Spring Island BC. They use edible and non edible plants, barks, grasses, and stalks to create exquisite paper.

As collage artists, they use natures offerings in their designs, so crafting handmade paper was a natural progression and expression of their art.

The paper making started in their kitchen with a blender and cooked leaves and grasses from the garden.

Patience and curiosity helped the process unfold. They peel, cut and cook for hours intoxicated by the plants scents. Beating the plants into a pulpy mixture then stirred into water is where the sheet pulling begins. Their paper is made to write on, paint on, or just enjoy the beauty and expression of nature within the paper.

Some of the plants used are:

iris leaf, garlic stems, seaweed, artemesia, hollyhock, corn husks, horsetail plant, and grasses gathered from the gardens and farms of Salt Spring Island BC

Dinah paints on recycled wood which is salvaged from old buildings, fences or is washed up on local beaches. The paintings are framed in alder twigs or in Pacific Willow branches. Pieces of wrecked boats which are washed up on shore and weathered boards present a natural beauty that represents years of history that blend into the ambience of her unique style of painting.

“My roots are firmly and happily planted on our beautiful island. There is a great feeling of inspiration from walking the beaches and enjoing the natural beauty of the ocean. Each piece of wood has its own imperfections, nail holes, scrapes and marks which I include in my paintings. I hope you enjoy my art.” Dinah!

I make art because it is the most effective way for me to express myself passionately. It combines my love of nature and human nature. It can be as simple or as complex as I choose. Art opens up and expresses the flow of human consciousness in a way that I find exiting and personal. My compositions start with a sense of movement; gesture and colour form the next layer. I then use a more structured approach to complete the piece. The intention of my art is to touch the heart and mind of the viewer and to inspire a reverence for nature.

Lyn has been working with clay for over 20 years and uses handbuilt, wheel-thrown and altered form techniques. She makes a wide range of pottery from pendants to bowls and platters to wall art. The common theme in all her pieces is a touch of the coast. She uses stamped and rolled impressions of shells and seaweed and carvings of herons, salmon and dolphins. She combines her glazes to depict colors of the sea, sand and sky. All of her stoneware pottery is oven, microwave and dishwasher safe.

Lyn lives and works out of her home studio in Powell River, B.C. “Living on the coast and being in nature provides me with a wealth of ideas and inspiration. I take these ideas back to my studio and work and play with them.”

In the past couple of years Lyn has been drawn to work with the technique of smoke-fired pottery. “The rich red tones of the clay contrasted with black slip designs are burnished to a natural shine. I love the warmth and beauty of the bare clay with all its subtle impressions and the unpredictable patterns from the fire.” Smoke-fired pottery is food-safe but because it is fired to a lower temperature it is more fragile and not intended for general use.

Many people and life experiences have contributed to and influenced my work. It is constantly changing as one idea grows into another.

My main studies have been to know various structures within the basic weaving theories so I can expand in those areas with non-conventional combinations of colours and setts (how one puts the threads through the reed, on a loom). From here the main structures are expounded upon, stretching them to a higher number of harnesses to get the intricacies I know will work. I design the warp first, thread by thread, and then if it is not space-dyed or other plan, it goes on the loom directly.

After this, the article is very likely finished on the loom with hemstitching, or it is then ready for the dye-pot. Many things are factored in. Daily weaving is my bread and butter, and when I have time I concentrate on a deeper artful approach. But even with the day to day handweaving, having two items the same is rare.

My main looms are a 12 harness 60” LeClerc floor loom, 5 table looms, 36” 4 harness floor loom (being re-designed to an 8), 16 harness AVL pegging system floor loom, plus lots of spinning fibres and accessories. I can’t think of a fibre I don’t like to work with. This year’s selection for the Sooke Fine Arts Show has in it hand-spun recycled coke (pop) bottles! When purchasing this fibre I enquired as to the origin of this roving as it was just labeled ‘acrylic’ handspinning fibre. The answer was that is was recycled coke bottles.

How I got started – I was living in Dawson Creek during 1991 and joined the local guild. During the next summer we were demonstrating weaving and spinning in one of the log cabins at the local heritage site. The girls were always bugging me about being a weaver – no way! Anyhow, in front of some tourists, I was coaxed up onto the weavers’ bench and threw the shuttle, and that was it. I purchased a floor loom later that summer and was on my way. There have been lots of bumps and delights along the way, but to this day weaving is my passion and I’ll try and evangelize anyone I can. My earliest mentors and teachers are all passed away now, Dorothy Powell, Sue Brocke, and Casey Moser, to whom I am eternally grateful.

Thank you for supporting the show – enjoy your visit. If you haven’t found your gifting, may this show encourage you.
