“Heaven on Earth” as seen on Trip Advisor Lawrence, Kansas Sep 17, 2010 | Trip type: Couples Grandifolia Room My husband and I were married here on September 10th. It was the most beautiful setting…right on the water with the mountains in the background. Only a 45 minute drive to Victoria. We were so happy with our room. Very large, fireplace, balcony, soft bedding, luxury soaps, I could go on and on. It is a very romantic place so be sure to share it with someone you love. Oh and the artwork! The House could be a gallery in itself. If...

Blue Chanterelle, Polyozellus multiplex Michel Jansen-Reynaud, former Sooke Harbour House waiter and active mushroom forager, found this very rare mushroom north of Sooke. Although this is a good edible mushroom, it should be picked with restraint. I found this text book cep or porcini, Boletus edulis, on September 9th. Michel Jansen-Reynaud is delivering the King Bolete or porcini and is probably the forager with the greatest knowledge of mushrooms and good sites between Sooke and Port Renfrew. The mushrooms he delivers are always...

I fractured the tap root on a few of my own but feel a little better after looking at the photographs in Mushrooms Demystified, page 415, since the images there show damage to the deepest segment of the tap root. Arora...

On August 24th, I had the good fortune of dining with Agnes Gunderloch and Fritz Hasselbach of Gunderloch Winery in Rheinhessen, at Sooke Harbour House. I was lucky enough to meet them during a Canadian Governor General’s tour to Germany with Her Excellency, Adrianne Clarkson and John Ralston Saul in 2005 when we enjoyed a delicious lunch together at the winery. I truly enjoyed their wines that day and am convinced that Gunderloch wines are amongst the very best in the world. Agnes Gunderloch and Fritz Hasselbach were here for the marriage...
